How to Keep Your Body Hydrated in Summer

Summer means scorching heat and a whole lot of sweating because of the increased level of humidity. And excessive sweating results in losing water and electrolytes from the body and causing dehydration. But water is important for our body on so many levels. Water doesn't only maintain a balanced temperature of our body, but also lubricates and cushions joints, gets rid of toxins and protects tissues. That's why dehydration is harmful for health and causes problems like fatigue, dizziness, indigestion, diarrhea, loss of appetite and even kidney stones. To prevent such issues, it's essential to take extra care of your body, especially during these warmer months so it has enough hydration. That's why we are here to help you with some useful tips on how to stay hydrated in the summer season.

  1. Drink plenty of water frequently: This is obviously the thumb rule to get the adequate dose of hydration in your body. Drink plenty of water at regular intervals throughout the day. The amount of water intake required for a body to sustain well varies from person to person depending on their age, sex, medications and health conditions. But it is pretty evident that especially in summer, you need to consume more water than usual. Be extra careful when you are doing any intense physical activities, because you need to compensate for the water you are sweating out. If you are forgetful about drinking water frequently, then set reminders on your phone from time to time.

  1. Eat fruits and vegetables with high water content: Drinking water is often not enough because it generally makes up for 80% of regular water intake of a body. The other 20% comes from food. Consume green leafy vegetables and fruits rich in water content to beat dehydration. Cucumber, Celery, Tomatoes, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Grapefruit, Lettuce, Peaches, Strawberries are some of the most common water-rich fruits and vegetables you should definitely include in your diet in summer months.

  1. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol: It's really enticing to drink chilled sugary drinks like coke, milkshake, energy drinks and lemonades during a hot summer day. But drinks with high sugar content and other artificial sweeteners are not really helpful to keep your body hydrated. Instead they strip the body cells off substances which hold and absorb water. Alcohol also has similar effects on the body. So it's better to avoid such drinks as much as possible, at least in these warmer seasons to keep dehydration at bay.

  1. Drink infused water: Many people struggle with drinking plain water frequently. So here's a tip on how to drink more water without adding a lot of sugar or such. Squeeze a fresh lemon or add mint, lime, oranges or cucumber to your water to enhance the flavor of it naturally. Infused water tastes a lot more tasty and refreshing than plain water, so it's easy to drink more.

  1. Drink coconut water: Drink coconut water on a hot summer afternoon instead of store-bought fruit juice or smoothie. Coconut water doesn't only fulfill the requirement of the body's fluid intake, but also provides many necessary minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium etc.

  1. Eat broth-based cold soup: As an additional helpful source of hydration, eat broth-based cold soups. They are also nourishing and tasty.

  1. Take frequent baths: Though taking a bath doesn't really help with hydrating the body, it helps keep you cool and relaxed. And keeping your body cool is important in summer to minimize sweating and causing dehydration.

  1. Wear lighter clothes: In summer, it's highly recommended that you wear lighter and comfortable cotton clothes instead of heavy and dark colored clothes. Lighter clothes will help you remain cool in hot weather and cause less sweating.

  1. Carry a face mist everywhere: Dehydration causes the skin to tighten and get irritated. So take care of your precious skin by carrying around a face mist everywhere to give your face some hydration boost throughout the day.

10. Look out for symptoms: Dehydration is a common phenomenon in summer so carefully look out for the symptoms of it. If you are experiencing fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, diarrhea, less urination or dark yellow urine, then these can be your signs of dehydration. Some over-the-counter medicines work pretty well for mild cases, but for severe cases, you will need doctor's guidance immediately.
