History
ANUBIS
Anubis was the son of Osiris and Nephthys. His domain was the place between the material world of our earth, and the invisible world of the Afterlife. He was extremely important because he knew the way through the Underworld and back. The jackal head of Anubis was easily recognizable among all the Egyptian gods. It was a fitting image for the lord of the Underworld, as jackals were often found in the cities of the dead in Egypt, scavenging in the tombs. As the god of the Underworld, Anubis taught Egyptians the art of embalming and mummification. It was Anubis who helped Isis and Nephthys find Osiris and put his body together after the attack by Seth. They did this by wrapping Osiris up in long strips of linen, creating the first mummy. In ancient art, Anubis was often shown leaning over mummies, saying magic spells to protect them for eternity
He was also very important in the afterlife, the world where his father Osiris ruled. Anubis brought the soul of a deceased person to the gates of the Underworld and introduced him or her to Osiris. Anubis protected and guided souls in and out of this intermediate place, called the "Duat." Then Anubis weighed the person's heart against the feather of Ma-at. If the deceased had lived a good life, his or her heart would be as light as that feather and balance the scales; the person's soul would then go on to the Afterlife. But if the heart was heavy with bad deeds, it would be eaten by the monster Ammut, who waited hungrily near the scales. Anubis made sure that the judgement of Osiris was fair.
