The production process begins with clay, a unique material found exclusively in Fes City at a place called "Ben Jellik." The clay is carefully brought to this location and left to dry for 20 days. Afterward, it is broken into smaller pieces using large hammers and allowed to dry further for a full day. Skilled workers then meticulously remove impurities and unwanted rocks from the clay, a specialized task only found in Fes due to its close ties to the sun.

 

Talented artisans shape the clay dough into various handmade items, including flower vases, jars, and plates, carrying on an inherited craft. These creations undergo an 8-hour baking process at 2000°C in an oven. The products are then painted using natural-based colors derived from natural resources. Brushes made of horsehair are utilized to apply various colors such as blue, red, and black. A final coating is applied to enhance the shine, and the products are baked once again for 8 hours on burned wood. This process ensures the longevity of the paint, enabling everyday use with either hot or cold water.

 

Moving on to Zellige, the baked clay pieces are given to Nekkach, who decides on the pattern based on their intended placement. Drawing inspiration from ancient references such as Karaouiyn and the king's palaces, Nekkach arranges the Zellige pieces in a captivating geometric pattern. The application of "La resin" or "cola sima" is followed by drying, after which the pieces are flipped to reveal the intricate Zellige design. This meticulous craftsmanship exemplifies the artistry of clay work in Fes City.
