Crafted from the unique material known as "Clay," sourced exclusively from Fes City in a specific location called "Ben Jellik," the production process of these tiles is steeped in tradition. The clay is carefully collected and left to dry for 20 days before being crushed into small pieces with a large hammer. After another day of drying, it is submerged in water for two days, followed by a meticulous process of removing unwanted rocks and impurities. This particular activity is exclusive to Fes City, where the close relationship with the sun plays a significant role.

Talented artisans then shape the clay dough into various forms, including flower vases, jars, plates, and the exceptional handmade tiles that we present to you. Each tile is a testament to the inherited craftwork passed down through generations, representing the true artistry and skill of Moroccan artisans.

Once the handmade tiles are ready, they undergo a rigorous firing process in an oven at a scorching temperature of 2000°C for eight hours. This intensive step ensures their durability and longevity. Following the firing process, the tiles are meticulously hand painted with colors inspired by Moroccan fortunes, dining tables, and walls. Only natural-based colors derived from local resources are used, and the paintbrushes, crafted from fine horsehair, lend precision and attention to detail. The result is a captivating array of colors, including shades of blue, red, and black, enhancing the beauty of each tile.

To preserve their luster and make them suitable for daily use, the tiles are coated with a special material that imparts a glossy finish. They are then placed back in the oven for an additional eight hours, where they are baked using burned wood. This final step ensures that the tiles are not only visually striking but also resistant to both hot and cold water, making them practical for a wide range of applications.

The art of Zellige takes center stage as the tiles undergo additional firings to reveal their distinctive patterns. Skilled artisan Nekkach, guided by ancient references such as Karaouiyn and the majestic palaces of kings, meticulously arranges the geometric motifs in a captivating and visually stunning manner. This process breathes life into each tile, reflecting the true craftsmanship of clay in the city of Fes.

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Moroccan design with Custo Mosaic's Hand Painted Terracotta Zellige 10" x 10" Handmade Tiles. Customizable and rich in cultural heritage, these tiles will transform your space into a work of art, creating a timeless connection between the past and the present.
