HATHOR

Hathor existed before the Pharaohs ruled. Possibly the greatest of the Egyptian goddesses, she was all-encompassing and was called the "Queen of the Four Corners of the Sky." Hathor helped Ra create the three dimensional and would travel with him across the sky each day. She was very much loved by Ra, and sometimes she was the only one who could cheer him up when he was sad. Hathor was also a healing goddess. She helped Horus regain his sight after his left eye was injured in a fight with Seth. Most often Hathor was shown as a royal cow or as a human woman with cow horns, signifying her stability and motherly love. She was worshipped as the mother of all pharaohs, who were known as the "Sons of Hathor." Hathor celebrated life and was well known as the goddess of love, beauty and joy. One of her powers was protecting and helping all women: mothers or maidens, young or old.

She was a patron of marriage harmony in the home. Egyptian women would often ask Hathor to help them win the hearts of their beloveds. The women of ancient Egypt were also extremely fond of make- up and very good at beauty techniques. They would have images of Hathor carved on their make-up and perfume jars. Hathor was also adored by artists, musicians, and dancers. She knew the secrets of music, which were woven into the beads of the neck- lace that she wore, called a Menat. Hathor protected all who passed through the Underworld as well. Egyptian women hoped to find their way to Hathor in the afterlife, in the same way that men wanted to join with Osiris
